It gives a panoramic view as it is quite low-lying with an average height of 15 meters above sea level.
Reminiscent of the mainland areas to the west and south of the island, its shrubbery is typical tropical savannah woodland with an assortment of mangroves on the coastline, paperbark, stringy-bark and pandanus. For thousands of years the island was colonized by Aborigines who had made their way transversely the Lowrie and Warwick Channels from Arnhem Land and sparingly settled in the island leading undemanding hunter gatherer subsistence. In the east of Groote Eylandt, there lies a picturesque shore line with a prawn processing factory at Bartalumba Bay.
